Praying the Regina Coeli with Art: This Week's Image

We "crown" the Easter season on this Pentecost Sunday with a lovely Catalonian Coronation by Bernat Martorell, the leading light of Gothic art in 15th century Barcelona. 

With the musical angels, we sing, "Queen of Heaven, Rejoice: Alleluia!" And we await the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit even in our own day.

Moving forward a few centuries (and more than a few miles) from the last post, this week's Coronation is from a monastic church in Missouri. The monks at Conception Abbey are rightly proud of their Beuronese murals, crafted by artist-monks who trained under the very creators of the art style (who were themselves monks). It's all very interesting, and since World Wars have a way of impacting the art that sits on church walls, the murals in the Missouri abbey church are particularly important.

Praying the Regina Coeli with Art: This Week's Image

This lovely Coronation is a detail from a retable, an ornate structure behind an altar that could be used for statues or as a frame for art. According to the website of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, this work is from

a mixed-media retable: its main body featured a cycle of paintings dedicated to the apostle, which would have closed with the Crucifixion of Saint Peter, conserved at the museum, and was arranged around a sculpture of the saint, attributed to Pere de Sant Joan (Museu Frederic Marès), a sculptor who hailed from Picardy (France). This is a fragment of the predella, that is, the bottom horizontal section of the retable, which was dedicated to the Joys of Virgin.

In context, the Coronation appears in sequence with the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost.

It was Giovanni da Bologna who created this mid-size Coronation panel (just over 8 inches across). Though he was identified as "da Bologna," the artist worked in Venice in the late 1300's.
